Hello. In this blog, I will be chronicling the experience of watching the 1995 anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion on the date each episode takes place throughout 2015. I will comment on the real-world situation and how it lines up or would make impossible the events of the show. Also, I will discuss my feelings on the episode and the series.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the first anime series I ever watched on DVD rather than on TV. It deserves the reputation for being the "Star Wars" of anime, at least because of how often Special Editions have been re-released. It could also be called the "Watchmen" of anime for the way it deconstructed the heroic "Giant Robot" anime genre and originated the look and feel future "Mecha" series would copy: reluctant, in-over-his-head protagonist, morally grey military/government organizations, religious/cultural symbolism, and the end of the world likely at stake.
The show takes place in the year 2015, 15 years after "Second Impact," a cataclysmic event originating in the South Pole. It cost Shinji Ikari his mother and Misato Katsuragi her father and led to the awakening of the Angels and the creation of the Eva units - the only thing that can stop them. By my calculation, the first episode takes place June 27, 2015 with Shinji arriving in Tokyo-3 and being led into Nerv to meet his estranged father, Gendo Ikari.
Unless I think of something to write about before then or worry Blogger will delete my account for inactivity, that will be the date of my next post.
